The lens
A holistic lens on where the market’s gravity sits
Product launches, customer wins, M&A and funding rounds each tell part of the story. Gravity puts them in one view: which companies hold enough scale to shape a category, and which are building toward it.
This lens comes from 30 years in HR and Work Tech and 17 years of tracking the market through the business that became WorkTech. It looks across funding and M&A, buyer adoption, macro trends and technology shifts in 65+ categories.
This is a starting point. Every buyer’s lens is different, so the list is categorical, with no rankings and no composite scores. You read the bars against your own situation.
What the list answers
The question depends on where you sit
CHROs and Talent Acquisition LeadersWhich vendors will still be standing, and supported, when your contract ends?
InvestorsWhich companies are closing in on platform status before the rest of the market prices it in?
ProvidersWhere do buyers place you against the names they already trust?
The framework
The market is shaped like an hourglass
WorkTech Hourglass Framework, as defined in the Opening and Closing Market Windows series. Scale gathers at the top and momentum at the bottom.
Gravity Leaders · the wide topCompanies with the scale, customer base and M&A capacity to shape their category. They set the terms everyone else gets measured against.
The Squeeze · the narrow middleCompanies between the two positions, with neither platform gravity nor breakout momentum yet. Plenty of them are healthy, valuable businesses. This band is unlisted by design.
Gravity Builders · the wide bottomCompanies earning enough traction to be acquired, or to become platforms themselves.
How to read it
One row, one bar per criterion
Each row shows a company’s category and subcategory, then one bar for each criterion. A longer bar means a stronger position on that criterion. Leaders are read across four criteria and Builders across three, because the two tiers answer different questions.
Gravity Leaders · four criteria The question: what position does this company hold?
Company namePrimary category / Subcategory
Market Presence & Scale
Acquisition Activity
Standard Bearer
Sustained Relevance
Gravity Builders · three criteria The question: what pull is this company building?
Company namePrimary category / Subcategory
Momentum Signals
Product & Category Fit
Investor Thesis Fit
Illustrative bars only. Each criterion keeps its own color throughout the list.
The Watch List · First Drop
Gravity Leaders and Gravity Builders
Each tier is listed alphabetically, with no ranking. Each bar shows where a company sits on one of WorkTech’s criteria. The list grows as assessments complete.
Companies that anchor their markets through scale, acquisition activity, standard-setting influence, and staying power.
The suite vendors set the pace here. Presence is high across the group, and Acquisition Activity runs higher than in either of the other categories, so some of these companies grow by buying and others by building. That spread is a useful clue about roadmap stability.
Scale sits mostly with the ATS and TA suites and the job marketplaces. Deal activity is quieter than in HCM, so these positions have been earned through product and distribution more than through consolidation.
Learning, engagement, recognition and compensation anchor this group. Standard Bearer is the strongest bar here and Acquisition Activity the weakest, which fits the quieter M&A history of post-hire talent.
What this means for CHROs, investors and providers
CHROs and Talent Acquisition LeadersThese are the vendors most likely to be here and supported when your contract ends. Use the bars to see where each one's strength sits, then match it to what you're protecting. At renewal, check Acquisition Activity first: a long bar means the roadmap may shift underneath you.
InvestorsLeaders set the reference points everyone else gets measured against, and they're the most likely buyers in any consolidation. A large vendor with a short Acquisition Activity bar can point to buying power that hasn't been put to work yet.
ProvidersBuyers compare you against these names. The bars show which ground each Leader holds and where a gap leaves room for you.
How to read the bars
Market Presence & ScaleReach across customers, geographies and workflows. Read it as how likely a vendor is to already sit inside your peers' stacks.
Acquisition ActivityHow actively a company buys capability or gets bought. A long bar means a roadmap shaped by deals, which can speed up or reshuffle what you're relying on.
Standard BearerWhether competitors measure themselves against this company and buyers treat it as a must-look on every shortlist. It shows who sets the terms of the category.
Sustained RelevanceHow well a company has held its position as the category changed. Staying power through product cycles carries real weight in a multi-year contract.

Companies building market pull through momentum, product and category fit, and investor thesis fit.
Payroll, benefits, financial wellness and compliance names show the strongest Momentum and Product & Category Fit of any Builder group. These products attach to spend buyers are already making.
The largest Builder group and the most crowded. Sourcing, assessment, recruitment marketing and ATS entrants sit close together, so the differences are small and the useful question is which problem each one solves best.
The smallest group, with softer Momentum than the other two categories and solid product fit. Post-hire talent has had a quieter funding market, so these companies are earlier in earning the attention TA and HCM Builders already have.
What this means for CHROs, investors and providers
CHROs and Talent Acquisition LeadersBuilders bring newer capability with a shorter track record. Start with Product & Category Fit to see whether a company solves your problem, then check Momentum for evidence it'll be around to keep solving it. A pilot is the right size of commitment.
InvestorsA strong Investor Thesis Fit bar with softer Momentum deserves a second look, since traction may be trailing a position the category already supports. Compare within a category before comparing across them.
ProvidersPartners, competitors and acquisition candidates show up here first. A long Product & Category Fit bar tells you which Builders are working on problems your customers already raise.
How to read the bars
Momentum SignalsRecent movement in funding, hiring, customer wins and product releases. This bar shows who's gaining pace now, before scale catches up.
Product & Category FitHow closely the product matches a growing buyer need. A long bar points to a company solving something buyers already budget for.
Investor Thesis FitHow closely the company lines up with where investors are putting capital. It signals who's likely to have the funding to keep building.

Gravity Profiles
The read behind the bars, for select providers.
A Gravity Profile is WorkTech’s independent one-page assessment of where a company sits in its market and why. Look for the Gravity Profile marker beside a company’s name. Profiles become downloads as each company approves its own.
Why it holds gravity. A plain-language assessment against each criterion, so you can see the reasoning behind the bars.
What to watch. The next moves and open questions that will show whether a position strengthens.
What it means for you. A read for CHROs and TA leaders, investors and providers, built for shortlists, diligence and partner decisions.
Each company reviews its profile for factual accuracy before it publishes. Placement on the list and WorkTech’s assessments remain independent.

A living list
This is the first drop. The list keeps moving.
WorkTech has assessed far more providers than this first drop covers, and later updates bring more of them in.
New companies join with each update.
Bars move when the market does. A funding round, an acquisition or a product shift can change where a company sits.
Categories grow too. Expect new subcategories as segments take shape, from recognition and learning to AI agent management.
